![]() ![]() It’s hard to track exactly how English learners do over time because the English learner population is constantly changing. Other programs teach students mostly in the language other than English in kindergarten and gradually add more English each year. Some programs teach students half the day in English and half in the other language starting in kindergarten. Languages taught include Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, Korean, Mandarin, Vietnamese and many others.ĭual-language immersion programs are designed to teach both students who are fluent in English and students who are fluent in another language so that both groups of students retain their home language and learn a second language. In California, 747 schools had dual-language immersion programs in 2019, according to the California Department of Education. In addition, students in dual-immersion programs tend to have better reading and writing skills in their home languages than those who have been taught only in English. Longer-term bilingual programs that continue into middle or high school often have better achievement. These programs sometimes take longer to get students to proficiency in English, but several studies show that by the end of elementary school, they have at least the same number of students proficient in English as programs that teach students only in English. It’s actually a common pattern for dual-language immersion programs. These aren’t the same students - that is hard to measure this year because most students didn’t take standardized tests during 20 due to the pandemic. In sixth grade, 42.85% of students who were once English learners met or exceeded standards in English language arts, higher than the statewide rate of 34.66%. That’s lower than the statewide rate of 16.8%.īut the number of students who were once English learners reading and writing at grade level increases in each grade at the school, surpassing the statewide numbers in fourth grade. Just 12.5% of English learners in third grade at the school were reading and writing at grade level in 2022, according to their scores on Smarter Balanced, the state’s standardized test. If you look at English learners’ third-grade reading scores in English at Dolores Huerta International Academy, a dual-language immersion school in Fontana Unified, you might not be too impressed.īut if you look at how students who began school as English learners do over several years, you see huge growth. ![]()
![]() ![]() Second, we have noticed a developing strategy where Survivors would hold an EMP at all times and only use it once the Killer attempts to tag them with a Temporal Slipstream during a chase. Survivors will still be able to defend themselves against Biopods in key locations, but they will want to use them strategically as to not waste them. With these adjustments combined, EMPs will be less readily available and leave Biopods disabled for a shorter period of time. Reduced the duration of disabled Biopods to 45 seconds (was 60 seconds).Increased EMP Generation time to 100 seconds (was 90 seconds).Reduced the number of Supply Cases to 4 (was 5).Now that we’ve had some time to see how these tweaks have played out, we feel comfortable reducing the frequency of EMPs even further. We needed to be careful since making EMPs too hard to get could have the opposite problem of removing counterplay from Survivors. Holding an EMP offers a Survivor too much protection against The Singularity’s Power, allowing them to quickly and easily remove Slipstream and disable Biopods while being chased.įor the former, we made some incremental changes between the Public Test Build (PTB) and live release, reducing the number of Supply Cases and increasing the time it takes for them to print. The Singularity’s Biopods are often disabled, making it difficult to use its Power.Today, we’ll take a moment to run through each of the adjustments we have made and give some explanation as to why we are making them.īut first, let’s cover a few trends we’ve noticed: We’ve been keeping a close eye out for feedback since the launch, and we are already preparing a few balance changes for an upcoming update. ![]() The second approach takes a wider view, and counts even “normal” romantic passions as being chemically and behaviorally analogous to addiction (e.g., Fisher et al. Research in this vein focuses on sexual compulsions, paedophilia, toxic or abusive relationships, abnormal attachments and unhealthy tolerance of negative life- and relationship outcomes (e.g., Carnes 2005 Reynaud et al. The first approach counts only the most extreme cases (or phases) of love and love-related behaviors as being potential instances of addiction. While the specific nature of these parallels has been described in inconsistent language throughout the literature, two main approaches to conceptualizing the relationship between love and addiction can be usefully teased out. Consequently, scientists have begun to draw a number of parallels between the naturally rewarding phenomena associated with human love and the artificial stimulation afforded by the use of addictive substances such as alcohol, heroin, or cocaine (see Frascella et al. The involvement of similar neurochemicals and neural activities in processes associated with addiction has already been well established ( Blum, Chen, et al. These reactions involve such compounds as dopamine, oxytocin, vasopressin, and serotonin and recruit brain regions known to play a role in the development of trust, the creation of feelings of pleasure, and the signalling of reward ( Esch and Stefano 2005). Taken together, these studies suggest that the subjective state (or states) of “being in love” is intimately tied to characteristic biochemical reactions occurring within the brain. The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in published studies on the neurobiology and neurochemistry of romantic love (for overviews, see Savulescu and Sandberg 2008 Earp, Sandberg, and Savulescu 2012). So numerous are the superficial similarities between addictive substance use and love- and sex-based interpersonal attachments, from exhilaration, ecstasy, and craving, to irregular physiological responses and obsessive patterns of thought, that a number of scientific theorists have begun to argue that both sorts of phenomena may rely upon similar or even identical psychological, chemical, and neuroanatomical substrates (e.g., Insel 2003 Fisher, Brown, Aron, Strong, and Mashek 2010 Burkett and Young 2012). Surely it is all just hyperbole and poetic license? So it might seem absurd on its face to suggest that there could be a real similarity between lovers and “genuine” addicts. By contrast, nobody yearns to become addicted to heroin (for example), or cigarettes, or slot machines. Nevertheless, although we do sometimes use the language of addiction when referring to love, there is at least one major feature that distinguishes love from the kinds of substance-based addictions typically described in the psychological and medical literature: nearly everyone aspires to fall in love at least once in their life. These phenomena-including cycles of alternating ecstasy and despair, desperate longing, and the extreme and sometimes damaging thoughts and behaviors that can follow from love’s loss-bear a resemblance to analogous phenomena associated with more “conventional” addictions like those for drugs, alcohol, or gambling. We may even become depressed, or withdrawn from society ( Mearns 1991). ![]() When relationships come to an unwanted end, we feel pain, grief, and loss. In 2011, over 10% of murders in the United States were committed by the victim’s lover ( FBI 2011). In the worst case, they can become deadly. Lovers can become distracted, unreliable, unreasonable, or even unfaithful. Other times, love’s pull is so strong that we might follow it even to the point of hardship or personal ruin ( Earp, Wudarczyk, Sandberg, and Savulescu 2013). When our feelings are returned, we might feel euphoric. ![]() ![]() Love can be thrilling, but it can also be perilous. Contemporary film expresses a similar sentiment: as Jake Gyllenhaal’s character famously says in Brokeback Mountain, “I wish I knew how to quit you.” And everyday speech, too, is rife with such expressions as “I need you” and “I’m addicted to you.” These widely-used phrases capture what many people know first-hand: that when we are in love, we feel an overwhelmingly strong attraction to another person-one that is persistent, urgent, and hard to ignore. ![]() Ovid was the first to proclaim: “I can’t live with or without you” ( Amores III, xi, 39)-a locution made famous to modern ears by the Irish band U2. Iron Man plays in a very simple manner, with all action occurring on the top screen of the DS and the HUD and schematics of Stark’s iron suit on the bottom. Couple such lack of design flair with a horrid frame rate at even the best of times, and Iron Man is a disappointing title visually. ![]() Enemies lack any real variety or personality and environments within the game, although kind of faithful to their source material are equally as bland. This can be said because Iron Man’s enemies as well as Iron Man himself look like jagged pixelated deformations. The game itself is presented in a full three dimensional world, and really shows the DS’ weakness in regards to generating good looking three dimensional objects. ![]() The menu and navigation are bland and lack any real eye catching stimuli. Iron Man is less than impressive with it’s presentation. Although the storyline of the film is included in the game, the developers have taken several liberties with the storyline, though most of the material comes from already existing content in the Iron Man universe. Naturally, of course, Stark’s business partner opposes his decision and builds a suit for himself to stop him, creating a suitable rival for the player. Upon returning to the US, Stark upgrades and improves his suit into what we all know and love as Iron Man today, and makes it a life goal to destroy the instruments of death that his company has created. Rather than build the missile, however, Stark builds himself an iron suit equipped with primitive flame throwers, and escapes the country. During a well publicised business venture to Afghanistan for business, Stark is kidnapped by extremist militants and placed in solitary confinement, being forced to build a missile most probably for use against the United States. Although Iron Man is enjoyable for some short time, it is marred by several irritating design decisions.įollowing the storyline of the movie, Iron Man places players in the role of Tony Stark, a wealthy industrialist who is at the forefront of weapons development in the United States. With the very recent release of the Iron Man motion picture, Sega have gone ahead and put out a somewhat disappointing adaptation of the film for all conceivable systems, including Nintendo’s DS. Usually before or after the movie, we are treated with several different media tie-ins, including a video game adaptation. Meanwhile, it is important to note that players that getting the upgrades is completely optional, but they are something nice to have with. The events following or prefixing a release of a major blockbuster picture is of second nature to gamers.
